I approach Hawaiian knowledge, language, and lineage with respect and care, not as an expert or authority, but as a learner living and working in Hawaiʻi. As someone with Native American ancestry, I am deeply attentive to indigeneity, cultural memory, and the role lineage plays in shaping identity, shared history, and responsibility. My understanding is further informed by lived experience – listening, observing, and engaging thoughtfully with place, people, and story over time. MO‘OROZCO is both a play on my name – M. OROZCO – and an intentional reference to the moʻo within ʻike Hawaiʻi. Moʻo are often understood as powerful, ancestral beings – guardians of water, land, and sacred places – deeply connected to genealogy, memory, and continuity across generations. In Hawaiian knowledge traditions and scholarship, lineage is carried not only through blood, but through story. Moʻolelo (story, history, layered narrative) is not merely something told, but something lived – an accumulation of memory, place, and experience carried forward across generations. To hāʻi moʻolelo (to tell or give voice to story) is to participate in that continuity, while moʻolelo manaʻo (to share ideas, reflect, and “talk story”) is how understanding, values, and meaning are exchanged in relationship. As a marketer, my work is shaped by this practice – listening closely, honoring lived experience, and shaping narrative from context, care, and intention – rather than trend-driven messaging or performative brand language. The moʻo serves as a living allegory for lineage. The head faces forward, representing the present generation – my work today – looking toward what comes next. The front limbs claw and clear the path, shaped by the work and effort of my parents’ generation. The back legs form the strong, grounded foundation built by our grandparents – what allows us to stand, move, and endure. The spine and tail extend endlessly behind, carrying the weight of our ancestors’ wisdom, which cascades forward into our present. MO‘OROZCO reflects this understanding of work as generational, relational, and rooted – honoring what came before, acting with intention now, and making space for what follows.
